Splash!: It Worked for Dan Osborne

We all know the forgotten VIPs and the ones that would like to be VIPs taking part in reality TV shows. It doesn't really matter if it is the Big Brother house or the jungle, dance floor, ice field or the pool. None of the former contestants can claim that it worked for them to ignite or reignite a flagging career. But then Dan Osborne showed that it can be done. Dice were rigged in his favor, though.

Can you remember anyone taking part in that awfully boring jungle camp called I'm a Celebrity ... Get Me Out of Here!? The only one I do remember is Dougie Poynter of McFly fame, and he doesn't count because his career was not flagging when he joined. With Strictly Come Dancing (Dancing With The Stars) it's much of the same thing; there's Harry Judd of McFly, and it was no coincidence that the jungle and the dance floor saw McFly at the same time.

As to the other shows? Who knows, and especially, who cares? But here comes Dan Osborne to prove that it can be done. He entered the celebrity show Splash! as the guy known only to die hard TOWIE (The Only Way Is Essex) fans. He had a successful shoot for underwear; that showed he was a pretty boy and prepared to work, but it wasn't branding his name. Splash! has changed that for him.

The dice were rigged, as I said, in his favor. Or rather, his decision to take part was extremely shrewd. Combining him with Tom Daley was picture perfect material. Add to this his decision to do a naked shoot for Attitude Magazine at the same time, and you get the idea. And then he prove that he is a nice boy, just like Tom Daley, and doesn't take himself too seriously. With a few TV appearances and a photo shoot, he catapulted himself from TOWIE by-blow to sweetheart of the (mainly gay) nation.

What also sets Splash! apart from the other shows is the clever casting of the resident staff. With Tom Daley for the younger generation, equally charming Vernon Kay is presenting for the older generation. It's a bit of everything for everyone. And Dan Osborne has to be congratulated on recognizing and making use of this opportunity to make a move forward.

Any lessons to learn? Yes, good things can happen to nice people; and all those whingeing and whining has-been stars you normally see on such shows are just a pain because of that. If they were nice and upbeat, though, they probably would have a successful career still  and no need to go to the jungle.
