Refusing to Grow Up: Justin Bieber

2013 has not been the year for Justin Bieber. From beginning to end, he was intent on living his bratty phase to the fullest, probably something he missed doing at 15. Now, you would expect him to grow up, but he just showed that he is not yet ready to behave like a 19-year-old.

Police in Brazil have charged Justin Bieber with illegally spraying graffiti in Rio de Janeiro. Brazilian media reported about and published photos to prove that the 19-year-old singer was spraying graffiti onto the walls of the abandoned Hotel Nacional. In a press statement, Brazil's civil police force said that Justin Bieber had been charged with "defacing a building or urban monument by graffiti or other means". Defacing buildings is a crime in Brazil and is punishable by up to one year in jail or a fine.

The Canadian singer has been threatened with a fine after the pictures appeared in local media show him spraying graffiti onto a wall. The pictures showed him wearing a red cap and army pants and with a security guard on one side, while a police car was parked on the other. The pictures left no doubt about who was the perpetrator of the crime.

City Hall had authorized Justin Bieber to paint at a sports facility near to the Hotel Nacional, but members of his entourage claim he chose a different location to avoid his fans. Police now argue that the consent did not extend to any other places in Rio de Janeiro. However, officials described the case at the same time as "a minor offence".

This latest misdemeanor closes a trip to Brazil in which the teenage idol has variously been accused of swearing at photographers, was seen leaving a seedy night club, and was kicked out of Rio de Janeiro's most prestigious hotel. According to Globo TV network, Justin Bieber left Brazil on Wednesday afternoon in a private jet to go to Paraguay, where he is scheduled to perform.

This year has not been a good one for Justin Bieber and it is not the first time he has been involved in controversy. In February, he tried to get minors into a night club in London when celebrating his 19th birthday. In March, he was brattishly late for a concert in London. As his fans are mostly preteen, an appearance near to midnight instead of 10 pm is a gross incivility.

In April, he caused outrage with his message in a guestbook at the Anne Frank Museum in Amsterdam, writing he hoped that the Holocaust victim would have been a fan of his - "a belieber". Skipping school early to pursue his singing career might have been part of this unbeliebable stunt. Anne Frank's diary, written during the two years the teenager and her family hid from the Nazis in occupied Amsterdam prior to being found, deported, and murdered, made her a symbol of the suffering of Jews during World War II.

Rather amusingly, if you compare it to his total lack of sensitivity in Amsterdam, he was criticized for touching the biggest trophy in North American ice hockey, the Stanley Cup. And as a final affront to his fans, he then staid away from the Teen Choice Awards in August for no other reason than not wanting to attend. Brat.
